How To Avoid Visa Rejection + Examples

visa rejection

Visa rejection is a common phenomenon because it was established to regulate the number of foreign citizens in a country.

If you have ever been rejected, I promise you, it’s nothing personal, it’s them not you.

I understand it hurts like hell especially if you had bragged to your friends who are not in Nigeria that your visa is going to be a walk in the park or you have paid for flight tickets and accommodation.

Not to worry, in the blog post, I will be sharing how to avoid visa rejection, especially for newbies who are just attempting their first visa application.

Let’s get into it..

In 2022, a staggering 71% of Nigerian students saw their dreams of studying abroad dashed by visa rejection.

What is Visa Rejection?

Visa Rejection refers to the denial of an application for a visa by the relevant immigration authorities of a country.

This decision prevents the applicant from entering or staying in the country for the intended purpose, whether it be for tourism, business, study, work, or any other reason.

Unlike inter-state trips where you can pick up your bag and drive down to Abuja, Lagos or any of the Nigerian states without a visa, foreign travel are not like that.

When your visa is rejected, it means you either didn’t convince them enough or your proofs were not concrete enough for them to open up the borders of their country to you.

If you are the one, I’m sure you would do the same which is why I advised you earlier not to take it personal.

Here are some of the reasons why your visa was rejected;

Reasons For Visa Rejection

1. Wrongly filled application form

The visa application form serves as the first point of contact between you and the interviewer at the embassy. A wrongly filled visa application form can get you straight out of the door before anything.

For example, the form has December 1st 2024 but the supporting documents you presented like your date of birth certificate have December 1st 2023.

It could be a genuine error, but there’s a long list of people who are looking for the same opportunity as you are and no time for you to justify the disparity.

This disparity is enough to send you back to your house, no offence.

2. Insufficient supporting documents

Alongside your filled visa application form, there are other supporting documents required by the embassy of the country you want to travel to.

3. Inability to answer questions at the visa interview

If you were to hire someone to handle your business or to give an opportunity to and the person is unable to answer core questions that would help you determine if they deserve the opportunity.

What would you do?

Interviews can be defined as an opportunity to show a 3rd party that what you have previously written down is not fictional but the truth. And it is judged by the answers you provide.

For visa interviews, it is understandable that you might be nervous which may make it impossible for you to answer questions, but you need to gather yourself and do the needful.

Remember the goal is to convince your interviewer that you are not only worthy of the visa, but you would also make great use of the opportunity as well as abide by regulations for the duration of your stay.

4. Potential security risk to the destination country

More than anything, the embassy is more concerned about their Home Country than anything else, so if you seem like a threat to the country, no visa for you.

You want to try as much as possible not to appear like a threat when you show up for your visa interview.

How To Avoid Visa Rejection

1. Double-check your application

Ensure all required documents are submitted and that the information is accurate and consistent. Leave nothing to chance.

2. Provide clear and concise documentation

Make sure your documents are translated and certified, if necessary.

3. Show proof of financial support

Demonstrate sufficient funds for your trip, including accommodation and living expenses through bank statements, employment letters, or sponsor documentation.

4. Strong Ties to Home Country

You need to show strong ties to your home country, which indicates that you intend to return after your visit, especially for a visiting visa.

For example, strong ties like your family members, business establishments, investments etc.

5. Clearly state your travel intentions

As mentioned earlier, interviews are a good opportunity to express what you have in your mind that is not obvious to other people which should convince them enough to approve your visa application.

Visa rejection happens when you are not clear about your intentions or you are doing a poor job hiding your intentions which is dubious.

Before you get to the interview room, ensure you clearly know the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of your intended trip.

6. Avoid previous visa violations:

Do you remember this proverb that says “What an elder can see when he’s seated, a child cannot see it when standing”?

If you have ever been warned to not do something as little as defaulting visa regulations, this is one of the reasons.

Even if this is your first international trip planning, when you get to your destination, make sure you don’t default on the rules and regulations.

Unlike under-developed countries that don’t have structures in place to record visa offenders, some European countries have systems in place that automatically flag your passport when you’re processing a visa.

Ensure you’ve followed all visa rules and regulations in the past.
